LOCK 4 MURRAY RIVER

Public BBQ

Nestled in the heart of Riverland, near Berri, is the historic Lock 4 on Nitschke Road, a testament to the 1920's engineering that transformed the River Murray. These structures, initially designed for irrigation and improving navigation for Paddle Steamers, now play host to visitors seeking a glimpse into the past while enjoying the present. The lock, just minutes from Berri, is a delightful spot where one might catch sight of boats navigating through the lock chamber—a rare and captivating scene. Complementing this historical marvel is the free BBQ and picnic area, inviting passersby to linger a while, soak in the ambiance, and perhaps even spot a boat gracefully making its way through the lock. For those seeking a broader view, Kataraptko National Park offers a splendid vantage point, with Lock 4 visible from the Berri side of the river, completing a picture-perfect setting for a serene day out.
